The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force across the European Union on 25 May 2018

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force across the European Union on 25 May 2018. This regulation will change the way data are collected and processed. BNP Paribas Securities Services has been preparing for these changes for several months.

What is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)?

GDPR provides a single regulation on data protection and privacy for all citizens of the European Economic Area, with a higher level of protection for individuals. It addresses the challenges raised by new technologies, in line with digital practices.

In coordination with the BNP Paribas Group, we have set up a GDPR programme and governance, assembling a team dedicated to compliance and the implementation of policies and processes. Beyond compliance, our aim is to strengthen the transparency, security and quality of data collected from our customers.

We have three areas of focus in preparing for GDPR:

  • Implementing a strengthened and dedicated governance and fostering a culture of data privacy protection through employee training programmes
  • Ensuring our IT applications processing personal data are compliant with the new regulation, most notably in terms of security, traceability, and data retention time
  • Updating contractual clauses for customer and supplier contracts

We are currently finalising the changes expected by the European supervisory authorities by 25 May 2018 and are working on implementing a strategy for the constant improvement of transparency, security and quality of personal data, as required.

New contracts and contract renewals will include updated clauses required by GDPR. For current contracts, if required to comply with GDPR, updated clauses can also be added at the client's request.
